PREMIUM WORKPLACE DESIGN
During the time of Peapes’ operations on George Street in the 1900’s, there were many influences in men’s fashion including war, pop-culture and advancements in garment construction technologies. From the highly tailored 3-piece suits of the 1920’s through to the rise of smart casual in the 1950’s, Hammond Studio has translated these trends into palettes that can be applied to the interiors via finishes application and look and feel of the loose furnture.

TAILOR MADE DESIGN
Designed by award-winning Hammond Studio, the interior of the Peapes Building offers a contemporary and highly functional transformation of a heritage building.

THE STORY OF THE PEAPES BUILDING
Brookfield Properties is proud to give new life to an iconic building rich with history to the Sydney CBD. The Peapes menswear store was a Sydney institution, trading on George Street for over 100 years before closing down in 1971.
Famous throughout Sydney, Peapes was an establishment of class, fitted out with marble and jarrah and with a mezzanine floor encircling a central light well. There was even a room where clients could relax, write correspondence, smoke or conduct business, as befitting the club like atmosphere of the whole building.
There were both ready-to-wear and tailoring departments with all the requisites for men in society – hats, tobacco, footwear, neckwear, sportswear and travel attire.

1866
George Peapes and William Shaw set up a small men’s outfitters ‘Peapes & Shaw’ at 338 George Street. In 1891, the business became known as Peapes & Co.
1920
Peapes decided to build its own purpose-designed store, purchasing two 3-storey terraces at 285-287 George Street.
1923 – 1970
Peapes Menswear remained at 285 George Street until its closure in 1970/71.
2022
Completion of a stunning major refurbishment as a key part of Brookfield Place Sydney.
